Birch Bark and Roses

Here is a lovely card I made as part of my application to be a Heartfelt Creations Design Team member. Next week I will find out if I made it to the semi-final round. It’s been a busy new year! Here’s to hoping spring will be here soon! 🙂

A few years ago I was walking in the woods on the farm where my husband grew up in northern Minnesota. I found some amazing pieces of birch bark. I gathered some hoping one day I would be inspired to create something. I used some of it to cover the roof of a cedar birdhouse. The rest of it I saved until this week when I made this lovely woodsy card full of flowers and bark and dripping with hope of spring! This would be a beautiful piece to display in a shadow box frame!

6” x 6” Birch Bark Rose Card:

Supplies:

HFC Classic Rose Stamps and Dies, Flowering Dogwood and Doves Stamp and Dies, Classic Rose Vines Stamps and Die, Raindrops on Roses Die, Delightful Daisies Die (leaf), dries clear adhesive, hot glue, Cold Press 140# watercolor paper (I use Strathmore), 110# White cardstock, Woodsy Wonderland Paper Collection, Distress Ink: Mowed Lawn, Peeled Paint, Forest Moss, Vintage Photo, Concord Grape, Seedless Preserves, Picked Raspberry, Staz-On Ink: Timber Brown, tree bark stencil, modeling paste, pallet knife, score board, paper trimmer, flower shaping tool, water brush, an interesting piece of real birch bark. Be sure to use 110 # heavy cardstock for the base, as this is a heavy card. (Some paper is labeled 110# index cardstock, this is not the same weight cardstock as 110# cardstock).

Directions:

Cut one 5.5” x 5.5” piece of watercolor paper. Stencil with bark stencil and modeling paste, set aside to dry. Cut a 6”x 6” hinged cardstock card base from 110# white cardstock. To make a hinged 6” x6” card, cut one piece 6” x 6”, cut another 6” x 7” and score one inch in, fold it, and adhere it to the other piece. Cut one Raindrops on Roses piece and cut it in half. Cut one 5.75” x 5.75” piece from the Woodsy Wonderland Paper Collection, I used the deep purple/grape color piece. Using Staz-On Timber Brown stamp all your roses, vines, dogwood cascade, and daisy leaves on a large piece of watercolor paper, cut with coordinating dies, color with Distress Ink, shape while wet with flower shaping tools, set aside to dry. Assemble all your flowers and glue together. Distress your bark stenciled piece. Do a dry run with your pieces and see how you like them and how you want to put them together. (Each birch bark piece is different, if you don’t have birch bark available, you can use birch bark paper or another alternative. Then, layer and adhere all the pieces. Enjoy!
